FDA在2020年7月2日週四的公告警告，某些洗手液中雖然標示乙醇，但經過測試確存在甲醛。甲醇是一種有機化合物，被皮膚吸收或攝入可能危及生命安全。
根據規定，因為甲醇的毒性，絕對不能將其添加於洗手液中，FDA已經開始對特定幾家洗手液廠商進行調查。
根據FDA消息指出，大量接觸甲醇會導致噁心、嘔吐、頭痛、視力模糊甚至永久失明、癲癇、昏迷、神經系統永久性損害或死亡。其中風險最大的群體在於幼童以及把這些產品當成酒精喝的成年人。
FDA提醒消費者，在使用洗手間之後、用餐前、咳嗽、打噴嚏或擤鼻涕後，用肥皂與清水洗手20秒鐘最有效果。沒有辦法用肥皂與清水再考慮使用含百分之60乙醇的酒精。
最後，FDA提醒消費者
- 儘管某些洗手液內含乙醇而非甲醇，任何情況下都不該喝下任何洗手液
- 某些洗手液中的乙醇含量可能不足，無法有效殺死病菌
- 不要相信號稱可以預防COVID-19的洗手液
- 不要相信宣稱「經過FDA批准」的洗手液，因為FDA沒有批准過任何洗手液
- 攝入少量洗手液即可能對幼童產生致命傷害，要注意洗手液的包裝不要當成飲料來喝
